History of Massage

Massage is considered to be among the oldest therapeutic and preventative treatments used by man.  The Chinese, documenting it’s use, made records dating back as far as 3000 years.  The ancient Hindus, Persians, and Egyptians used forms of massage for some ailments.  Hypocrites wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems.  Today massage is an accepted part of rehabilitation programs and is proven to alleviate many chronic conditions such as lower back pain, arthritis, and bursitis.  Massage relieves the stress and tension of everyday living.

The practice of therapeutic massage in the United States dates back to at least the 1890s.  Massage was routinely available at YMCAs and YWCAs.  Practitioners have offered massage services ever since.

Massage promotes a state of balance and well-being.  Massage or bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension, pain and improve circulation.  It increases joint flexibility, reduces mental stress, physical fatigue, and promotes faster healing of injured muscular tissue. Massage improves posture and may also help to reduce blood pressure.
